TRIZ: Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (PST104)

INTRODUCTION
This course intends to explore the basic concept of modern problem solving approach with reference to method invented by a Russian researcher. Conventional methods such as PDCA, PDSA, though proven to be effective and able to solve problems in the past, may not be appropriate and suitable in present day’s problems. TRIZ provide an innovative method of solving difficult problems using a more systematic and algorithmic approach. This approach coupled with engineering knowledge will be provide a innovative solution, which will be free from the same old way.

COURSE OUTLINE
MODULE 1: WHAT IS TRIZ – THEORY OF INVENTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING?
• Definition and History of TRIZ development
• Principles of innovation
• 40 principles of invention
• Exercise : Define the steps of problem solving based on the case studies provided. Present your finding to the class for comments and feedback for improvement.

MODULE 2: BASIC TERMINOLOGIES USE IN TRIZ
• Ideal final result
• Contradictions in term of Technical, Management and physical
• Separation principle
• Level of invention, standards
• Law of Technical Systems Evolution
• Defining your problem statement clearly
• Application examples on above principles and definition

MODULE 3: APPROACH FOR TRIZ
3.1. IDENTIFYING A PROBLEM: CONTRADICTIONS
• Examples of contradictions
• Technical and economical contradiction
• Exercise : Develop some contradiction examples in your daily life
3.2. INVENTIVE PRINCIPLES AND THE MATRIX OF CONTRADICTIONS
• Must and Want’s of a product
• Undesirable results of a design
• Mapping the Wants and Must Versus undesirable results in a matrix
• Exercise : Establish a contradiction matrix for your product based on your selected product
3.3. LAWS OF TECHNICAL SYSTEM EVOLUTION
• Trends of change
• Technical development over the years
3.4. SUBSTANCE-FIELD ANALYSIS
• Definition of substance and field in TRIZ
• Exercise: Perform a Substance-field analysis of your product
3.5. ARIZ - ALGORITHM OF INVENTIVE PROBLEMS SOLVING
• Steps by steps to solve difficult problems
• Solving problem in systematic and directive way
• Case studies and example

MODULE 4: ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF SOLVING PROBLEM
• Looking at all possible alternatives
• Brainstorming – Creative thinking
• Trial and error
• Morphological analysis
• Methods of focus object
• Examples and exercises using above approach

MODULE 5: DERIVING SOLUTION
• Criteria for effective solution
• Contribution of Technical analysis, business decision towards the structure of solution
• Deriving and Testing of solution
• Effective implementation approach
• Measuring of effectiveness
• Continuous monitoring

Exercises and Workshop session will be included in this session to help participants to realize the importance of Deriving problem statement, establish contradiction, contradiction metrix development and other related activities in order to achieve an innovative solution.

METHODOLOGY
As this course is workshop oriented, a lot of exercises and role play will be given during the course. Participants can also expect the discussion of a few real case studies in this course. The training Methodology includes Case Studies, Lecture, Problem Solving, Exercises and small work group activities. The course will be conducted through a sequential Workshops for all topics covered.

TRAINER PROFILE
MS PF LAI has a Bachelor in Engineering (2nd Class Upper Honours) from The University of Malaya. She was attached to well-known Local Contract Manufacturing Company for the last 11 years where she had hands-on experience in the Quality, Quality Systems and Process Engineering.

Her success in her career include ISO9000 certification, TPM implementation, taking responsibility to develop quality systems for various procedures and involvement in in-process problem solving and yield improvement programmes, developing training materials, measurement and evaluation systems, new product specifications and standard operating procedures.

She has been involved in teaching and training for the past 11 years and has conducted trainings in quality, quality systems and technical areas. Her hands-on experience in manufacturing as well exposure in training personnel from diverse industries in Malaysia enables her to provide a good insight to troubleshooting process problems and improving overall quality as well as latest developments in the quality arena.
